A School Bus Driver interacts daily with children and serves as their trusted transportation to and from school. As such, a School Bus Driver should be free of any traffic or criminal violations, pass a drug test and should have an authoritative, yet calming demeanor and a strong understanding of traffic laws. Along with excellent driving skills, communication, reasoning, problem solving and patience are among the key attributes of a successful student transportation professional. Training is provide for both CDL and non CDL positions.
General duties of the School Bus Driver may include the following:
- Transport children to and from school and school trips
- Discipline children as needed to maintain a safe environment
- Obey all traffic laws
- Assist in the maintenance of a clean and mechanically sound vehicle
- Ensure the safety of all riders
- Communicate with riders, parents, and school officials
- Perform inspections of the bus before and after each route
- Attend safety meetings as required
- Complete required paperwork
- CDL with School and Passenger endorsement required for some vehicles
